James E. Rothman is the Sterling Professor of Cell Biology and Professor of Chemistry at Yale University. He leads the Department of Cell Biology at Yale School of Medicine and directs the Nanobiology Institute at Yale’s West Campus. His pioneering work on vesicle trafficking and membrane fusion mechanisms has revolutionized understanding of cellular processes critical to health and disease. Rothman earned his BA from Yale (1971), PhD from Harvard (1976), and completed postdoctoral work at MIT. His career includes roles at Stanford, Princeton, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, and Columbia before joining Yale in 2008.
Research Focus: Biophysical mechanisms of membrane fusion, SNARE protein function, Golgi apparatus dynamics, and bio-inspired nanotechnology. Current projects include super-resolution imaging of Golgi structure and SNARE complex analysis in synaptic transmission.
