Education Background:
- PhD, University of Oxford (2016)
Research Focus: Dowthwaite's scholarly work primarily engages with late 19th-century literature (fin de siècle), examining aestheticism, decadence, and symbolism. He maintains active research in modernism, particularly the works of Ezra Pound, and investigates poetry's historical trajectory, literary criticism's evolution, and literature's philosophical and theological dimensions. His current project analyzes representations of fate in Victorian and Edwardian writing.
Academic Contributions: Beyond traditional scholarship, Dowthwaite publishes poetry in journals such as Acumen, The High Window, and Poetry Salzburg Review. He co-founded the international research network Modernism, Aestheticism, and Decadence Studies with Melissa Sarikaya (University of Erlangen-Nürnberg), fostering collaborative work in these fields.
Teaching and Supervision: His teaching spans British literary history from medieval to contemporary periods, with frequent offerings on 19th-20th century literature, alternative comedy, and the British Empire's decline. He actively supervises undergraduate and graduate theses across BA, MA, BEd, and MEd programs for students researching his areas of expertise.
