Daniel Swift is Associate Professor in English at Northeastern University London. He holds a BA in English Literature from Oxford University and a PhD in English & Comparative Literature from Columbia University. He is a member of the Shakespeare Association of America and has taught at institutions including Skidmore College, Barnard College, NYU, Columbia University, and the Cooper Union.
His research explores Shakespeare and late 16th century theatre, American/British mid-20th century poetry, and literary biography. His book The Bughouse: The Poetry, Politics, and Madness of Ezra Pound (2017) examines Ezra Pound's institutionalization, while his edited collection The Heart Is Strange: The New Selected Poems of John Berryman revives a pivotal poetic voice.
Swift's publications consistently engage with Shakespearean reinterpretations across modern contexts, with recent works analyzing political leadership through literary frameworks (e.g., Trump/Shakespearean tyranny) and cultural memory through historical events. His 2013-2019 output demonstrates sustained interest in biographical criticism and literary adaptations across diverse media formats.
As an educator, Swift teaches courses spanning Literature 1550-1700, Literary Kinds, Criticism, and 20th century poetry. His festival appearances include Hay Festival (2010, 2012), Edinburgh Festival (2010, 2017), and Sydney Writers Festival (2011), alongside BBC and NPR media engagements.
