James David Kubicki serves as Professor and Department Chair of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), operating from the Geological Sciences Building in El Paso, Texas. As a 2016 Interdisciplinary Research Fellow, he collaborates with the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and Office of the Provost to address critical uncertainties in climate science.
His research specializes in atmospheric aerosols—their chemical composition, physical behavior, and dual impacts on climate systems and human health. Kubicki employs computational chemistry and reaction kinetics to model aerosol interactions, explicitly identifying these particles as one of the largest sources of uncertainty in current climate models. He actively expands this field beyond traditional atmospheric scientists to include geographers, biologists, and medical professionals.
Recognition for his work includes UTEP's Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship and inclusion among faculty named to global top-researcher lists. His awards demonstrate institutional validation of cross-disciplinary approaches:
- Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) Fellow (2016)
Kubicki directs significant institutional resources including UTEP's $5M climate change mitigation initiative, building research teams that bridge environmental science, public health, and computational modeling. His current focus involves forming a community of practice to integrate aerosol research across medical and ecological domains.
