James Crossley is the Academic Director of the Critical Study of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements (CenSAMM) at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Divinity since 2024. He concurrently holds roles as Professor of Bible, Society and Politics at MF Oslo and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College London. Previously, he was Professor of Bible and Society at St Mary’s University (2015–2022) and held progressively senior roles at the University of Sheffield (2005–2015).
His research focuses on apocalypticism and politics, with dual emphases: first-century Christian origins and the historical Jesus, and the reception of biblical narratives in English political discourse. Notable works include Spectres of John Ball (2022) and A. L. Morton and the Radical Tradition (2025), examining medieval rebellions and the legacy of English radical historiography.
Co-editing the Critical Dictionary of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements with Alastair Lockhart, funded by the Panacea Charitable Trust, he bridges historical analysis with contemporary social movements. His interdisciplinary approach intersects theology, history, and political science.
Education: All degrees from the University of Nottingham (1995–2002), including undergraduate theology with English studies, postgraduate religious studies, and New Testament studies.
