James Crossley is a Research Professor in Bible, Society and Politics at MF University College of Theology, Religion and Society since 2022. Previously held positions include Professor of Bible, Culture, and Politics at the University of Sheffield and Professor of Bible and Society at St Mary's University, London. He directs the Center for the Critical Study of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements (CenSAMM). His research bridges historical Jesus studies and modern political-religious dynamics, focusing on how socio-economic change influences biblical interpretation and apocalyptic thought.
Research interests include first-century Judaism, socio-economic intersections with early Christian traditions, and the interplay between political rhetoric and religious meaning-making. He explores how historical upheavals shape contemporary understandings of religious texts, particularly through case studies like the 1381 English Peasants' Revolt and Nordic biblical reception.
Recent publications analyze apocalyptic movements, medieval rebellions, and Marxist critiques of Christian origins. His work highlights connections between biblical narratives and modern socio-political struggles, emphasizing class conflict and ideological transformation. Crossley welcomes PhD students in both historical and contemporary research areas.
