Alastair Lockhart is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College London, affiliated with the Department of Theology & Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. His research focuses on contemporary and 20th-century religion, with specialties in the psychology of religion, apocalypticism, and millenarianism. He has conducted extensive work on the Panacea Society, a millenarian group active from post-WWI until 2012, culminating in his 2019 monograph Personal Religion and Spiritual Healing.
Lockhart holds a BA in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Computer Sciences and an MA in the Psychology of Religion from the University of London, and a PhD from Cambridge on 'Religion, Psychology, and Metaphysics in Interwar Britain.'
His current research explores the evolutionary psychology of religion and secular/theological responses to the atomic bombs of 1945. His work often bridges historical analysis and theoretical frameworks, including cognitive science of religion and the study of religious marginalization.
Lockhart's publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles, addressing topics from mystical experiences to the persistence of religious belief in modern contexts. His edited Critical Dictionary of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements (2021) and his 2023 article on evolutionary psychology further highlight his interdisciplinary approach.
