James Cole is a Professor and Dean of the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Brighton. His research focuses on understanding human evolution through material culture, cognitive development, and hominin dispersals. He leads major international projects like the Isimila Stone Age Project in Tanzania and has conducted fieldwork in East Africa and the UK. His work is supported by institutions such as the British Academy and AHRC.
Education: PhD (2011), Master (2008), and Bachelor (2004) in Archaeology from the University of Southampton. Holds fellowships with the Higher Education Academy (2020–present) and the Royal Anthropological Institute (2018–present).
Research Interests: Origins of human cognition, symbolism, language, and cannibalism; Acheulean handaxes; hominin dispersals; and the intersection of archaeology with climate change and aging studies. His 2018 Ig Nobel Prize recognized groundbreaking work on prehistoric cannibalism.
Teaching emphasizes student engagement through case studies and critical thinking, as seen in modules like ‘Human Origins and Evolution’ and ‘Global Environmental Issues’. Supervises postgraduate research in Palaeolithic Archaeology and Hominin Evolution.
Projects include investigating hominin responses to super-volcanic eruptions and climatic shifts, as well as编辑ing volumes like Landscapes of Human Evolution to honor John Gowlett’s contributions to archaeology.
