Professor John McNabb is a distinguished archaeologist at the University of Southampton's Department of Archaeology, specializing in the Acheulean period and early human evolution. He has been with the university since 2000, focusing on the material culture of Homo erectus and Homo heidelbergensis (c. 1.8 - 0.3 mya). His work spans both archaeological analysis of stone tools and the historical development of human origins research as an academic discipline.
McNabb's primary research focuses on the Acheulean period, particularly examining handaxe manufacture techniques and what they reveal about cognitive evolution and Theory of Mind development. His secondary research strand explores how Victorian and Edwardian science fiction influenced public understanding and scientific approaches to human origins. He has developed methodologies to analyze knapping techniques and finishing patterns on large cutting tools to identify standardized approaches and potentially individual knappers' styles.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output across multiple venues, with research spanning British Lower Paleolithic sites, African archaeology (particularly South Africa and Tanzania), and theoretical explorations of cognitive evolution. McNabb examines how stone tool morphology reflects cognitive capabilities and social behaviors of early hominins, while also investigating how cultural narratives shaped scientific understanding of human evolution.
Professor McNabb actively supervises PhD students in archaeology, with current advisees including Kate Anderson, Jack Rogers, and Alexandra Isabel De Almeida Pestana Barroso, and previously supervised Zheyang Chen. He is a member of the Centre for the Archaeology of Human Origins (CAHO) and has served as a reviewer for Routledge and presented at international conferences including the UISPP Conference in Paris.
His academic journey began at Lancaster University, continued with an MA at the Institute of Archaeology in London, and involved significant work at the British Museum and Liverpool University before joining Southampton. McNabb has conducted fieldwork in South Africa, Tanzania, and Greece, developing a particular expertise in Earlier Stone Age sites and the Clactonian industry.
