James Chyz is the Pugh CPAs Professor of Accounting and Wyatt Family Faculty Fellow at the Haslam College of Business, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He joined the Accounting & Information Management department in 2010 after earning his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Arizona. His expertise spans taxation, financial reporting, corporate governance, and valuation. Chyz teaches valuation to graduate students and a capital markets research seminar to Ph.D. candidates.
Chyz holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Yale University (2000) and an M.Acc. from the University of North Carolina (2003). Before academia, he worked as a Tax Senior at Grant Thornton, LLP. His research focuses on corporate tax policy, asset pricing, and the interplay between taxes and financial reporting. Notable publications appear in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Journal of Financial Economics.
His research interests emphasize tax strategy impacts, executive behavior in tax decisions, and auditor-tax service dynamics. Recent work explores tax aggressiveness, IPO tax planning, and the consequences of tax over/underpayment on CEO turnover.
Chyz has received numerous awards, including multiple Haslam Summer Scholar Research Awards (2021, 2020, 2019), the Pugh Professorship (2019), and the Rhea and Ivy Excellence in Teaching Award (2018). He has also secured grants such as the SEC Research Travel Grant (2017/2018) and the Jeff & Janet Davis Faculty Research Fellowship (2015-2016).
As a former member of Yale’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team (1996-2000), Chyz combines academic rigor with a background in competitive athletics. He currently serves in the Neel Corporate Governance Center and advises Ph.D. student Hannah Smith through a Summer GRA Grant.
