James C. Dever III is a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina and holds academic roles at Duke University School of Law as a Senior Lecturing Fellow since 2008. He has been an adjunct law professor at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law since 1997. His judicial career includes service as Chief Judge from 2011–2018 and roles on the Advisory Committee on Criminal Rules, including as Chair since 2022.
Education: B.B.A. (high honors, University of Notre Dame, 1984) and J.D. (high honors, Duke University School of Law, 1987). Notable academic achievements include editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal, Order of the Coif membership, and the Raymond P. Kent Award for academic excellence in finance/economics.
Professional experience includes a judicial clerkship for Judge J. Clifford Wallace (9th Circuit), active duty in the Air Force (1988–1992), and private practice in civil litigation. Awards include the Meritorious Service Medal for Air Force service and recognition in Best Lawyers in America and Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite for employment law expertise.
Advisory and governance roles include Duke Law School’s Board of Visitors and Belmont Abbey College’s Board of Trustees. He has contributed to criminal justice reform through advisory committees and maintains a chambers in Raleigh, North Carolina.
