Professor James Batchelor is the University of Southampton's Professorial Fellow of Clinical Informatics and Healthcare Innovation, serving as Director of the Clinical Informatics Research Unit (CIRU) and leading the £16M EDGE Programme. He oversees a global network of hospitals and research organizations, supporting over 150,000 research projects and managing 7 million patients. His research focuses on digital health strategies, data science-driven health system strengthening, and blast injury research through the International Blast Injury Research Network (IBRN). He advises governments and international bodies like the WHO and US Department of Defense.
Key roles include Chair of the Commonwealth Centre for Digital Health and participation in global initiatives like the International Forum on Blast Injury Countermeasures. His work spans public health systems, clinical informatics, and conflict-related health challenges. Notable collaborations extend to Brazil, South Africa, India, and New Zealand.
Professor Batchelor has received recognition such as the 2021 Vice-Chancellor's Award for his pandemic response efforts and the 2019 University Award for International Collaboration. He supervises four PhD students and leads over 50 professionals in CIRU. His grants total ~£6.1M, with partnerships in over ten countries.
