Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen is a Professor of Scandinavian and Comparative Literature at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS). He holds administrative roles including Deputy Dean of the UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities (since 2024), Vice Dean for Education (since 2021), and Founding Director of the UCL Centre for Humanities Education. Previously, he served as Programme Director for BA Language and Culture, BA Comparative Literature, and Scandinavian Studies (2020-2024), and Co-Chair of UCL’s Grand Challenges Human Wellbeing initiative (2016-2019).
- Education: PhD in Comparative Literature from Aarhus University (2007), Candidatus (1998), and BA in Arts (1995), with a fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago (1997).
His research focuses on Scandinavian literature and culture, including crime fiction and the welfare state, Nordic Noir’s global mediation, ecocriticism, Hans Christian Andersen’s print culture, and world literature methodologies. He co-founded the Nordic Noir Book Club in London (2010) and actively engages with media on Nordic cultural topics.
He has held academic roles across Denmark, the US, and the UK since 1999, including Visiting Lecturer at the University of Washington (2001–2004) and lecturer positions at Holbæk Teachers' College and Aarhus University. His administrative leadership spans UCL’s arts and humanities education strategy, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
