Claire Thomson

Claire Thomson is a Professor of Cinema History at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the School of European Languages, Culture & Society (SELCS) and the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Comparative Literature. She holds editorial roles at Norvik Press and the Danish Film Institute's Kosmorama journal, and directs the Media Collaboration Network. Her research focuses on Danish and Nordic cinema, emphasizing state-sponsored short films, Dogme 95, and figures like Carl Th. Dreyer. Recent work explores eco-criticism and film's role in public health.

Thomson's publications include monographs on Danish informational cinema (2018), Vinterberg's Festen (2013), co-edited volumes on Nordic cinema history (2020) and propaganda media (2022), and a translation of Kristoffer Hegnsvad's Werner Herzog (2021). She is currently researching unfinished films by Dreyer, Bergman, and von Trier.

Engaging public audiences through BBC podcasts (Boring Talk, In Our Time) and academic comedy performances (Bright Club), she pioneers interdisciplinary outreach via projects like LOLs in Translation.
