Elettra Carbone is an Associate Professor in Scandinavian Studies at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS). She serves as Editor of the journal Scandinavica and collaborates with UCL's Research Institute for Collections. Her research focuses on cultural relations between the UK and the Nordic Region, representations of Scandinavia through UCL's collections, and the role of objects in language learning.
Research Interests: Carbone’s work explores Scandinavia’s cultural identity through literature, art, and material culture. Key themes include 19th-century Norwegian literature, Nordic-Italian cultural exchanges, and the mobility of Thorvaldsen’s sculptures. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking object-based learning with language education through exhibitions like Not Just Words (UCL Art Museum, 2023–2024) and Nordic Fragments (UCL, 2021).
Publications: She has authored Nordic Italies: Representations of Italy in Nordic Literature (2016) and co-edited volumes such as Sculpture and the Nordic Region (2017) and themed journal issues on Nordic publishing, constitutional history, and public discourse. Her forthcoming monograph Representations of Modern Scandinavia (UCL Press) further expands her object-based research.
Labs/Exhibitions: As a curator, she designed The Power of Language at UCL East’s Culture Lab (2025) and co-curated exhibitions merging academic research with public engagement.
