Jake Protivnak

Jake Protivnak is a Distinguished Professor and Counseling Program Director in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Counseling at Youngstown State University (YSU). He holds licenses as a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC-S) and School Counselor (LPSC), and is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). With over 20 years’ experience, his expertise spans counselor education, clinical mental health, school counseling, and adolescent development. He has authored 20+ journal articles, 30+ book chapters, and presented 100+ times nationally.

• Education: PhD in Counselor Education (Ohio University), MEd in Community Counseling (Kent State), BS in Psychology (Andrews University)
• Leadership: Past President of Ohio Counseling Association, 10+ years as Faculty Advisor for Chi Sigma Iota at YSU

His research focuses on counselor supervision practices, interventions for youth, and reducing mental health stigma. Notable contributions include developing partnerships between schools and university mental health centers. He has received over 15 major awards including the Libra Award (2024), Distinguished Professorship Awards (2023/2021/2019), and Counselor of the Year (2023).

Community involvement includes founding board member of State of Mind: Hudson, a mental health advocacy nonprofit. His service extends to roles in professional organizations like ACES, AMHCA, and CACREP.
