Dr. Jaime Grutzendler is the Dr. Harry M. Zimmerman and Dr. Nicholas and Viola Spinelli Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Yale University. He serves as Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Neurology and Director of the Center for Experimental Neuroimaging. His clinical work focuses on dementia and Alzheimer's disease at the Adler Memory Clinic, integrating genetic testing and innovative therapies.
- MD, Universidad Javeriana School of Medicine (1991)
- Internship and Residency, Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital (1995–1998)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Skirball Institute/New York University (2003)
His research explores cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, emphasizing Alzheimer's disease. Key areas include axonal disruption, myelin degeneration, glial neuroprotection, and gliovascular interactions. He develops advanced imaging techniques like spectral confocal reflectance microscopy (SCoRe) and 2Phatal ablation to study live brain dynamics.
Recent publications highlight his work on myelin-axon interface abnormalities in Alzheimer's, TREM2's role in microglial function, and novel therapeutic strategies targeting neurodegenerative pathways. His studies integrate subcellular proteomics, iPSC modeling, and optogenetics.
Scientific honors include election to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (2018), American Society for Clinical Investigation (2012), NIH Transformative Research Award (2010), and McCance Yale Scholar (2011). His lab collaborates with chemists to develop small molecules for drug delivery and imaging, supported by grants from NIH and Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
Clinically, he leads the Adler Memory Clinic, connecting patients with genetic testing and national support programs. The lab's interdisciplinary team includes researchers like Yifei Cai and Lei Tong, focusing on neuroimaging, vascular biology, and translational neuroscience.
