Jaeyoon Kim serves as Professor of History at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California, where he has taught since 2005 after positions at Cuyamaca College (2003-2005), Beijing University (Visiting Scholar, 2001-2002), and University of Oregon (Graduate Teaching Fellow, 1998-2001). His expertise spans world civilizations, Asian-American history, and modern East Asian history with specialized focus on Japan, Korea, and China.
Dr. Kim's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in History, University of Oregon
- M.A. in History, San Diego State University
- B.A. in History, Chonnam National University
His research centers on ethnic identity formation through peasant rebellions in 19th-20th century Southern China, particularly examining how local conflicts like Hakka-Punti tensions and Red Turban Rebellions shaped subethnic consciousness. Additional work investigates Chinese-Korean (hanhua) immigration history and diaspora identity formation in 20th century America, revealing complex intersections of cultural preservation and assimilation. This scholarship bridges regional Chinese history with transnational Korean experiences.
Kim's 15+ publications from 1991-2015 demonstrate consistent thematic focus on East Asian social history, evolving from early studies of Korea-Japan relations to in-depth analyses of Southern Chinese rebellions and contemporary diaspora communities. His work consistently examines how localized conflicts catalyze broader ethnic identity formation, with increasing attention to transnational migration patterns after 2005.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized through:
- RASP Grant from PLNU
- Robert Lang Dissertation Fellowship (University of Oregon)
- Multiple University of Oregon fellowships (General University Scholarship, CAPS Fellowship, Paul Dull Memorial Scholarship)
- PHI BETA DELTA Award (San Diego State University)
Dr. Kim actively contributes to academic communities through memberships in the Association for Asian Studies, World History Association, Conference on Faith and History, and Association for Preserving Historical Accuracy of Foreign Invasions in China. He also serves as AWANA Commander at San Diego Calvary Korean Church, demonstrating commitment to both scholarly and community engagement while teaching courses ranging from World Civilizations to specialized seminars on East Asian history.
