Professor Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson is a prominent academic at the University of Lincoln, serving as Professor in Sociology & Physical Culture within the School of Sport & Exercise Science. She concurrently directs the Health Advancement Research Team (HART), leading interdisciplinary research initiatives focused on embodiment, health, and physical culture.
Her research program centers on:
- The sociology of the senses in sport and exercise
- Phenomenological explorations of sporting embodiment
- Feminist phenomenology and women's sporting experience
- Embodiment in high-altitude mountaineering
- Weather work and sporting embodiment
- The lived experience of asthma and sporting/exercise embodiment
Professor Allen-Collinson's scholarly output reveals a consistent methodological commitment to sociological phenomenology across diverse physical contexts including competitive swimming, distance running, dance, women's boxing, and high-altitude mountaineering. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in how environmental factors like weather and temperature shape embodied sporting experiences through concepts such as 'weather work' and 'temperature work.' She has made significant contributions to qualitative research methodology, especially regarding reflexivity and bracketing in phenomenological inquiry.
As Director of HART, she bridges academic research with practical applications in community health settings, examining identity work among health trainers and barriers to physical activity participation. Her collaborative research network spans multiple institutions and disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of her work at the intersection of sociology, phenomenology, and physical culture studies.
