Jacqueline Avila is an Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with the Department of Music in the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research explores film music, sound studies, and the intersections of identity and modernity in Mexican, Latin American, and Latinx musical cultures. She has been supported by major grants including the UC MEXUS Dissertation Research Grant and the University of Tennessee’s SARIF-EPPE Subvention.
Dr. Avila holds a PhD and MA from the University of California, Riverside, and a BA in Music from UCLA. Her teaching focuses on Musicology and Ethnomusicology, with courses like Mexican Soundscapes and Music and Media. Her work bridges academic and public scholarship through contributions to journals like Journal of Film Music and American Music.
Her research emphasizes transnational media, cultural nostalgia, and borderland soundscapes. Notable projects include Cinesonidos: Film Music and National Identity in Mexico’s Época de Oro (2019) and analyses of Latinx representation in streaming media. She has presented at institutions like the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the University of Alabama.
