Professor Jacob Mugumbate is a researcher at Bindura University, Zimbabwe, and the University of Newcastle, Australia, with a primary focus on social work interventions for marginalized populations. His work bridges academic research and practical advocacy within Zimbabwean and international health contexts.
His educational background centers on a PhD in Social Work examining disability, employment, and social justice for people with epilepsy in Zimbabwe. This foundational research continues to drive his professional trajectory.
Professor Mugumbate's research interests concentrate on systemic barriers faced by people with epilepsy in Zimbabwean society, particularly regarding workforce integration and social inclusion. He investigates culturally specific manifestations of disability stigma, policy gaps in employment equity, and community-based approaches to advancing social justice for neurologically diverse populations within resource-constrained settings.
Professor Mugumbate maintains significant leadership roles across international epilepsy organizations. He currently chairs the social work taskforce of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and collaborates with the Epilepsy Resource Centre in Zimbabwe and Epilepsy Alliance Africa. Through the National Association of Social Workers (Zimbabwe), he coordinates the African Journal of Social Work and edits The Social Worker newsletter, shaping professional discourse across the continent.
