Jack I. Abecassis is the Edwin Sexton & Edna Patrick Smith Modern European Languages Professor and Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Pomona College. His interdisciplinary work bridges French literature, philosophy, and cognitive sciences, focusing on Early Modern and Enlightenment periods.
- Education: Magistère from Université de Paris IV (Sorbonne) and Ph.D. from University of California, Davis.
His research explores cognitive approaches to literature and film, with special emphasis on Michel de Montaigne, Pascal, Diderot, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. He has authored the seminal book Albert Cohen: Dissonant Voices and published extensively on Albert Cohen’s Jewish identity, philosophical themes, and the fantastic genre.
Recent publications examine neuro-cognitive empathy in Montaigne and randomness in narrative structures. His awards include an Honorable Mention for the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize (2005). He teaches courses in French literature, literary analysis, and the intersection of literature with cognitive sciences.
