Ellie Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Pomona College, part of The Claremont Colleges. She specializes in continental European philosophy, with a focus on 20th-century French philosophy, feminist theory, and phenomenology. Her research explores relational theories of selfhood, the philosophy of love, and sexual ethics. Anderson’s work bridges academic philosophy and public engagement, including her co-hosting of the Overthink podcast (a top .5% global podcast) and hosting Crash Course on political theory. She has received awards such as the 2024 Wig Distinguished Professor Award and fellowships from the Notre Dame Institute and Marc Sanders Foundation.
Anderson earned her Ph.D. from Emory University (2016) and holds degrees from Trinity College (B.A., 2011). Her academic contributions span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, translations of Derrida’s work, and editorial roles (e.g., Continental Philosophy Review). She has taught at Pitzer College, Scripps College, and Muhlenberg College. Her current projects include a monograph on phenomenology and selfhood, and analyses of self-care and self-objectification in contemporary life.
Research interests include feminist theory, phenomenology, sexual ethics, and existentialism. Her work addresses ethical dimensions of love, non-monogamy, and the gendered burdens of interpretation in relationships. Anderson also advocates for philosophical pluralism, emphasizing continental and global philosophies.
Awards include the Wig Distinguished Professor Award (2024), Notre Dame’s Signature Course Fellowship (2024–25), and multiple grants for teaching innovation and technology. She serves on academic committees and outreach initiatives, furthering philosophy’s public impact through media and education.
