Jack Derby is a Professor of the Practice at the Gordon Institute, part of Tufts University's School of Engineering. He has taught since 2007, focusing on courses like Entrepreneurial Marketing and The Science of Sales. He co-founded nine companies and is currently involved in a startup with Simin Meydani, a Senior Scientist at Tufts. He received the Henry and Madeline Fisher Award (Engineering Teacher of the Year) and holds roles as a General Partner at Converge Ventures and director of six corporate boards.
Derby served as Director of the Entrepreneurship Center (2019–2019) and contributed $10 million with his wife to name the Derby Entrepreneurship Center. His professional activities include strategic consulting via Derby Management and teaching at MIT’s Mechanical Engineering Department for two decades. Awards include the MIT Enterprise Forum’s Vincent Fulmer Award and Lifetime Achievement Recognition from the Association for Corporate Growth.
His research interests span marketing productivity, sales optimization, and business planning, with a focus on entrepreneurial ecosystems. Teaching emphasizes hands-on capstone projects with startup teams. Professional affiliations include leadership roles in venture capital, corporate growth initiatives, and angel investing networks.
