JJ Lee

JJ Lee (b.1969) is a tenured Associate Professor in the Faculty of Art at OCAD University. Born in Halifax, NS to Chinese and Hong Kong immigrant parents, she explores cultural intersections through mixed media. Lee holds a BFA from NSCAD University (1992) and an MFA from York University (1999).

Her research examines identity formation in diasporic communities through:

• Hybrid painting and drawing techniques
• Cultural appropriation and reinterpretation
• Asian-Western visual dialogues
• Installation-based narrative structures

Her artistic practice reconstructs colonized identities using 'mashups' of appropriated imagery.

Lee has received multiple awards for individual and collaborative work with The Drawing Board collective. Her works reside in prominent Canadian and American collections. Current representation includes Prow Gallery (Halifax) and Gallery on Queen (Fredericton).
