J. Roc Jih is an Associate Professor of the Practice in the MIT Department of Architecture and principal of Studio J. Jih. Their work focuses on cultures of form, material ecologies, geometry, and queer spatial practices. They hold a Masters of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a B.A. in Architectural Studies and Sculpture from Brown University.
Research interests include the intersection of architectural figures with cultural identity and material systems. Their projects, such as Tracing Queerness: Archiving the Ephemeral, explore queer spatial practices and community-driven ephemeral spaces.
Awards include the Progressive Architecture Award (2022), Design Vanguard Award (2023), and the MIT Bose Research Grant for mono-material basalt construction systems. They teach 4.105 Geometric Disciplines and 4.022 Design Techniques and Technologies at MIT.
Prior teaching includes Harvard and University of Pennsylvania, with lectures at UCLA and Yale. A member of the AIA, their work has been featured in CNN, The New York Times, and Wallpaper.
