Lisa Iwamoto is Chair and Professor of Architecture and holds the David K. Woo Chair in Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley's College of Environmental Design. She is based at Wurster Hall and is co-founder of IwamotoScott Architecture, an internationally recognized design practice established in 2002.
Her educational background includes a Master of Architecture with distinction from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Colorado. Iwamoto's research focuses on design synthesis and the innovative coherence of material, technological, spatial, geometric, and contextual constraints of building. She explores new materials and fabrication techniques for architectural design at multiple scales, including installations, buildings, interiors, and urban proposals.
Her work demonstrates a consistent exploration of material innovation, fabrication techniques, and spatial complexity across diverse project types and scales. Recent projects show particular emphasis on residential density solutions, workplace innovation, and cultural architecture with a strong connection to site-specific contexts. Her practice successfully bridges academic research with built work, often incorporating digital fabrication methods and innovative material applications.

Iwamoto's firm, IwamotoScott Architecture, has produced work published in hundreds of journals and exhibited in numerous museums and galleries worldwide. Her book Digital Fabrications: Architectural and Material Techniques (2009) further demonstrates her commitment to advancing architectural knowledge through both practice and scholarship.
