J. Richard Stevens serves as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and Associate Professor in the Media Studies department at the University of Colorado Boulder's College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI). He holds a PhD in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin (2004), an MS in Digital Media from Abilene Christian University (1999), and a BS in Advertising from the same institution (1996).
Dr. Stevens teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in new media theory, popular culture, and digital media skills. His research focuses on the intersection of ideological formation and media message dissemination, examining how cultural messages are formed through popular culture, how technology infrastructure affects media message delivery, communication technology policy, and how media platforms are changing American public discourse. His particular interests include technology diffusion patterns and American privacy norms, science communication in culture, conflicts regarding digital texts and copyright law, software interface communication of social norms, and nationalist ideology in comic books.
Dr. Stevens' scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on comic book studies, particularly Marvel comics, with recent publications analyzing gender representation in characters like Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, political dimensions of superhero narratives, and transmedia storytelling. His work connects comic book narratives to broader cultural discourses about nationalism, feminism, and American identity.
