Benjamin J. Robertson is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado. His research focuses on genre fiction (especially fantasy and weird fiction), franchise culture, aesthetic form, and contemporary capitalism. He co-edits the book series Mass Markets: Studies in Franchise Culture with Gerry Canavan and has published extensively on topics like transmedia storytelling, popular culture, and digital media. Robertson is also the author of None of this is normal: The Fiction of Jeff VanderMeer (2018). His current project explores Andor (the Disney+ series) as part of a broader investigation into franchise narrative structures.
Key research areas include the intersection of capitalism and cultural production, the evolution of genre boundaries, and the role of digital media in modern storytelling. Robertson’s work frequently engages with franchises like Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Dragonlance, analyzing their socio-cultural impacts and economic frameworks. He contributes to journals such as Configurations, Science Fiction Studies, and Extrapolation.
Recent projects include co-editing The Johns Hopkins Guide to Digital Media and examining topics like terrorism and network theory in popular media. His scholarship bridges literary analysis with critical theory, often addressing how fictional worlds reflect real-world political and economic systems.
Future work aims to expand his analysis of franchise culture into a comprehensive study, leveraging insights from Andor to explore transmedia storytelling’s evolution in response to contemporary capitalism.
