معرفی
J. Michael Beman is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Merced, within the Department of Life & Environmental Sciences, School of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on microbial ecology and biogeochemistry, particularly in aquatic systems such as high-altitude lakes in the Sierra Nevada, tropical oceans, and marine lakes in Palau. He investigates how microbial communities influence global biogeochemical cycles, including nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas emissions under climate change.
Education: Ph.D., 2006 - Stanford University (Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences); B.S., 2000 - Yale University.
Research highlights include studies on nitrification dynamics in oligotrophic lakes, ocean deoxygenation, and methane cycling mechanisms. He leads the Beman Lab, supported by grants from NSF CAREER and the Joint Genome Institute. Advises Ph.D. students like Eli Perez-Coronel and C.J. Hayden. Engages in undergraduate research through the Yosemite REU program.
Key contributions include identifying aerobic methane production in freshwater lakes, published in Nature Communications, and examining climate impacts on lake ecosystems. Collaborates on tropical cyclone research and archaeal biodiversity projects.
