J. Jarpa Dawuni is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Founding Director of the Center for Women, Gender, and Global Leadership at Howard University. His research focuses on women's representation in judiciaries, particularly in African contexts, emphasizing intersectionality and institutional barriers. He has authored four books on women judges and leads a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded study analyzing Black and Afro-descendant women's access to judicial roles in eight countries.
His work explores how socioeconomic, political, and institutional factors influence women's judicial careers, advocating for inclusive jurisprudence and policy reforms. Collaborators include Alice Kang (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Gbemende Johnson & Daniel Marzo (University of Georgia). Findings aim to inform diversity programs and social justice initiatives.
