Beverley Baines is a Professor of Public and Constitutional Law at Queen’s University Faculty of Law. Her research focuses on sex equality rights under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, intersectionality, gender and religion, and the role of women judges and law professors. She holds a BA (Economics & Political Science) from McGill University and a JD from Queen’s University.
Prior roles include Associate Dean (1994–1997), Head of the Department of Gender Studies (2004–2011), and Co-Coordinator of the Institute of Women’s Studies. She co-edited influential books such as Feminist Constitutionalism: Global Perspectives (2012) and The Gender of Constitutional Jurisprudence (2004). Her work critiques legal frameworks impacting religious women’s rights, including niqab bans and polygamy criminalization.
Research interests emphasize intersectional approaches to constitutional law, judicial diversity, and legal strategies to combat gender inequality. Notable publications analyze niqab bans in courtrooms, faith-based arbitrations, and the underrepresentation of women on constitutional courts.
