J. Alan Yeakley is a Professor and Associate Dean in the Department of Geography & Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (1993). His primary affiliations include the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the Sondheim Hall facilities.
Yeakley's research focuses on Ecosystem Ecology, Watershed Hydrology, Urban Ecology, Riparian Ecosystems, and Socio-Ecological Systems. Key projects include NSF-funded studies on urban ecology and water resources management, urban ecosystem dynamics (IGERT program), and hydrological management of wetland plant ecology. He has also contributed to urban flooding science, riparian plant ecology, and salmonid conservation in the Pacific Northwest.
His recent work emphasizes urban environmental challenges, such as flood risk mitigation, green infrastructure effectiveness, and community-engaged approaches to ecosystem services. Notable outputs include chapters in the Routledge Handbook of Urban Ecology and editorship of Wild Salmonids in the Urbanizing Pacific Northwest.
