Beverley Wemple is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Vermont. She specializes in hydrologic and geomorphic processes in forested watersheds, with a focus on runoff generation, sediment production, and land-use impacts. Her work integrates field studies, simulation modeling, and GIS techniques to address environmental challenges like climate change and flood mitigation.
Education: Ph.D. (1998) in Forest Ecology from Oregon State University; M.S. (1994) in Physical Geography from Oregon State University; B.A. (1986) in Economics and German from the University of Richmond. Postdoctoral research at the USFS Pacific Northwest Research Station preceded her 1999 appointment at UVM.
Research Interests: Water resources management, mountain environments, and human-environment interactions. Current projects include the Mt. Mansfield Watershed Study and the Functioning Floodplain Initiative, aiming to enhance flood resiliency and water quality in Vermont.
Teaching: Courses span physical geography, watershed processes, GIS, and human-environmental systems. She mentors graduate students in Geology and the Rubenstein School and engages undergraduates in field research.
Grants and Collaborations: Focus on floodplain restoration, road erosion mitigation, and climate adaptation. Active in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Northeast Evaluation Testbeds for Hydrologic Impacts Forecasting.
