Rebecca Diehl is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Geosciences at the University of Vermont's College of Arts and Sciences. Since joining UVM in 2018, she has focused on fluvial geomorphology to advance sustainable water resource management through understanding river and floodplain systems.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Watershed Sciences, Utah State University
- M.A. in Geography, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- B.A. in Geography with Earth Sciences, Dartmouth College
Dr. Diehl's research centers on floodplain dynamics, ecogeomorphology, and flood inundation mapping. She examines sediment and nutrient transport processes and their contributions to ecosystem services including water quality mitigation, flood attenuation, and habitat provisioning. Her approach integrates field observations with geospatial data analysis to develop statistical and process-based tools for watershed management.
She has been recognized with an NSF Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability Fellowship. Her current research projects, funded by multiple agencies including the Lake Champlain Basin Program and USDA NRCS, address critical issues in floodplain management and water quality.
Dr. Diehl collaborates with a diverse team of researchers across UVM departments and external organizations. Her projects involve interdisciplinary groups working on the Lake Champlain Basin and Colorado River Basin, contributing to tools for natural resource planning and environmental flow prescriptions.
