J Blackwell

J Blackwell is an artist and faculty member at Bennington College, where they have been a visiting faculty member since 2009 and joined full-time in Fall 2016. They hold a BA from Bennington College and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Their work explores contemporary art through mixed media, focusing on sculpture and installation using scavenged plastics and fibers like wool and silk.

Blackwell’s art, such as the 'Neveruses' series, reimagines discarded materials into androgynous, lumpish forms that challenge utility and redundancy. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo shows in New York, London, Los Angeles, and Paris. They have received significant recognition, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant and fellowships from institutions such as ZKU Berlin and the Santa Fe Art Institute.
