Dr. Ivan Scales is an Associate Professor in Geography at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge. His research examines the social, political, and economic dimensions of natural resource use and biodiversity conservation, with fieldwork spanning mangrove forests in Madagascar and coastal communities in Brittany, France. He serves as Director of Studies in Geography and Admissions Tutor for Arts and Social Sciences at his college.

Research Interests encompass:
- Coastal Futures: Adapting to blue economy challenges and climate change impacts.
- Tropical Forest Conservation: Tree planting, carbon credits, and local livelihoods.
- African Agricultural Economy: Biofuels, smallholder responses, and sustainable finance.
- Environmental Values: Cultural, economic, and ideological narratives shaping policy.
- 20th Century Francophone Africa: Colonial to contemporary land use transitions.
