Professor Mark Huxham is a distinguished faculty member at Edinburgh Napier University's School of Applied Sciences, holding the academic rank of Professor with additional honors including Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), National Teaching Fellow (NTF), and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). His research spans marine ecology, climate change mitigation, and coastal ecosystem management with particular expertise in blue carbon ecosystems, mangrove conservation, and seagrass ecology.
Professor Huxham's research interests focus on the critical role of coastal ecosystems in climate change mitigation and adaptation. His work examines carbon sequestration in mangrove forests and seagrass meadows, the impacts of human activities on these ecosystems, and innovative approaches to their conservation and restoration. He has made significant contributions to understanding how these 'blue carbon' ecosystems can be integrated into climate policy frameworks and carbon markets while ensuring benefits for local communities.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on translating scientific understanding into practical conservation solutions, with work spanning multiple continents including Africa, Southeast Asia, and Scotland. He leads the Animal and Plant Science Research Group and collaborates extensively with international researchers on coastal conservation initiatives.
