Isidro Ferrer

Isidro Ferrer is a Senior Consultant Neuropathologist at Bellvitge University Hospital (2016–present) and Full Professor of Pathology at the University of Barcelona (1996–present). He is a pioneer in neuropathology and brain banking, with extensive leadership roles in research networks and institutions, including the Institute of Neurosciences (2014–present) and CIBERNED (2012–present).

His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases characterized by abnormal protein aggregates (e.g., Alzheimer’s, tauopathies, α-synucleinopathies, prion diseases), vascular pathology of the CNS, neuroinflammation, and mechanisms of apoptosis. He has leveraged brain banks, transgenic animal models, and multi-omics approaches to advance understanding and therapeutic testing.

His scientific contributions include bioinformatics-driven validation of human brain findings in rodent models, drug development (with patents), and investigations into protein seeding/propagation and CSF biomarkers.
