Isidre Ferrer

Isidre Ferrer is a Senior Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, and Director of the Institute of Neuropathology at IDIBELL-Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge. He holds a Doctor in Medicine degree from the University of Barcelona. His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly tauopathies, prion diseases, and autophagy mechanisms. He is affiliated with CIBERNED (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas) under the Institute Carlos III, Ministry of Health, Spain.

His work emphasizes protein aggregation, neurodegenerative biomarkers, and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration. He has contributed extensively to understanding tau seeding/spreading, prion protein behavior, and oligodendrocyte involvement in tauopathies. Ferrer’s research integrates molecular biology, neuropathology, and bioengineering approaches, exemplified by his use of microfluidic platforms to study prion-like protein assembly.

He has directed over 600 publications and editorial contributions, focusing on high-impact journals like Frontiers in Neuroscience and Molecular Neurobiology. His lab collaborations span international institutions, reflecting his leadership in neurodegenerative disease research networks.

Current projects include investigating olfactory bulb pathophysiology in Alzheimer’s models and alpha-synuclein dynamics in Parkinson’s disease. Ferrer’s work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to identify novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
