Dr. Isabelle Darmon is a Lecturer in Sociology and Sustainable Development at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and previously managed European research projects addressing unemployment and social inequality. Her research focuses on cultural sociology, critical theory, environmental sociology, and social sustainability. She co-convenes the Food Researchers In EDinburgh (FRIED) network and coordinates the European network Bridg’it, exploring food systems’ social sustainability. Her current research includes a monograph on materialist cultural sociology of the arts and theorizing social sustainability within capitalist transitions.
Her teaching includes courses on global environment and society, sustainable development, and sociology of food. She has supervised over 10 PhD students, with completed theses addressing topics like food education in Taiwan, eco-parenting, and forest governance in India. Dr. Darmon’s recent publications (e.g., 2024’s 'Equality, not sufficiency!') critically examine the inequality-unsustainability nexus in capitalism and food systems. She actively participates in international conferences and networks, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on sustainability and social justice.
Her academic contributions span cultural sociology of music and food, with a focus on cross-national comparisons. She is involved in collaborative projects like the 'Good Food Nation' initiative and leads the PTAS teaching award scheme. Dr. Darmon’s work integrates critical theory with empirical research, addressing contemporary societal challenges through a materialist sociological lens.
