Senja Laakso is an Associate Professor of Consumption Culture as Social Practices at the Centre for Consumer Society Research, University of Helsinki, and holds adjunct professorships in Sociology of Consumption and Sustainability (University of Jyväskylä, 2021) and Consumer Research (University of Helsinki, 2024). She is affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Social Sciences from the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki (2017). Her research focuses on everyday life, sustainable/unsustainable consumption patterns, sufficiency, and wellbeing, with cross-disciplinary contributions to energy policy and food systems.
Key projects include leading the ENUSE project (2021–2024) exploring sufficient energy use and co-leading the ENCIT project (2020–2024) examining societal tensions in energy transitions. She advises doctoral and master’s students, including Veera Koskela. Her work spans multiple grants from the Academy of Finland and EU frameworks. She actively participates in international conferences and editorial roles, contributing to journals like Energy Research & Social Science and Consumption and Society.
Recent publications emphasize energy-saving practices during crises, household responses to energy disruptions, and media framings of sustainability transitions. Her work bridges theory and policy, advocating for equitable and practice-based solutions in sustainability science.
