Isabelle Carbonell

Isabelle Carbonell is an Assistant Professor of Film at the American University of Paris (AUP), specializing in documentary filmmaking focused on environmental justice and the Anthropocene. She holds B.A. degrees in Environmental Science and Social Science from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in Film and Digital Media from UC Santa Cruz, and is completing a Ph.D. in Film and Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz. Her work explores expanded documentary forms, multispecies cinema, and the intersection of environmental crises with sensory experiences.

Her research emphasizes the 'slow violence' of ecological disasters, particularly through water systems and non-human perspectives. Awards include Mellon and Princess Grace fellowships, and her films have been showcased internationally. Carbonell teaches courses on eco-cinema, documentary production, and video techniques, including 'Eco-Cinema & the Rivers of Paris' and 'Advanced Video Production'.

Her recent publications (2020-2022) engage with panesthetic research methods, multispecies narratives, and the Rio Doce disaster. She collaborates with institutions like HKW/Max Planck and Stanford's Feral Atlas project, focusing on innovative methods to represent environmental crises through film and installation art.
