Selmin Kara serves as Assistant Professor of Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz, joining the faculty in 2024 after 13 years at Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto. Originally from Turkey, she brings international experience from academic positions in the United States (7 years) and Canada, with research deeply rooted in environmental consciousness shaped by her childhood as the daughter of a farmer father and professor mother.
Her educational trajectory includes a Bachelor's degree in Translation Studies from Turkey, followed by Master's and Ph.D. studies in Film and Documentary focusing on media theory, with doctoral work completed in Detroit, USA. This foundation propelled her transition from documentary production in Istanbul to academic research.
Professor Kara's scholarship critically examines humanity's environmental impact through the lens of contemporary media, pioneering work in eco-media and Anthropocene discourse. She investigates how emerging technologies—gaming, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR)—reshape documentary aesthetics within post-cinematic theory, bridging media studies with ecological activism. Her research manifests practically through pollinator gardening initiatives that treat horticulture as direct environmental engagement.
Securing grants in Canada for native plant reintroduction via community gardens, she now shifts focus to ecosystem preservation in Santa Cruz's unique bioregion. She actively cultivates student dialogue on evolving media landscapes, leveraging younger generations' perspectives to explore future trajectories where media forms converge and environmental stewardship becomes embedded in technological practice.
