Isabel Campbell is a Researcher in the Department of History at Carleton University, concurrently serving as an historian at the Directorate of History and Heritage, National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. Her work bridges academic and governmental historical scholarship with a focus on Canadian military and Cold War history.
She holds degrees from Memorial, Western, Carleton, and Laval universities. Her research integrates oral histories and innovative methodologies, emphasizing marginalized voices such as Inuit guides and military families. Current projects examine gender roles in military families, fictive kinships, and cultural othering in defense contexts.
Key publications include Unlikely Diplomats (2021) and co-authored volumes on the Royal Canadian Navy and Air Force. She collaborates with scholars from Carleton, Laurentian, Wilfred Laurier, and others, editing a volume exploring Cold War security through interdisciplinary lenses.
Campbell advocates for whole-life oral history approaches, centering lived experiences in defense policy analysis. She actively seeks graduate student co-supervision and fosters partnerships between academia and military institutions.
