Andrew Burtch is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University and serves as the Canadian War Museum’s post-1945 Historian. He specializes in curating exhibitions on modern conflicts, including the Cold War, Afghanistan, and Korean War. Burtch holds a B.A. and Ph.D. from Carleton University and an M.A. from Wilfrid Laurier University.
His research focuses on Canadian military history, memory and commemoration, Cold War culture, and the intersection of advertising with historical narratives. Notable works include his award-winning book Give Me Shelter and exhibitions like Kandahar–The Fighting Season and War and Medicine.
Awards include the 2012 C.P. Stacey Award for military history, multiple Canadian Museum Excellence Awards, and SSHRC funding. He co-supervises Master’s students and integrates museum-based learning into Carleton University’s international history courses.
Burtch served as Acting Director, Research at the Canadian War Museum (2014–2015) and has developed over a dozen exhibitions, emphasizing public engagement with military history and its cultural impacts.
