Isaac Harris is an Associate Tutor in the School of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of East Anglia. He is currently a PhD student in the Maklakov lab, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of East Anglia (2023-2027)
- Master in Science in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology at the University of Exeter (2022-2023)
- Bachelor of Science in Zoology (with integrated year in industry) at Aberystwyth University (2018-2022)
Mr Harris's research focuses on the evolution of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism. He investigates the adaptive value and molecular mechanisms of transgenerational effects. Additionally, he has a growing interest in evolutionary modeling, particularly the evolution of gene regulation plasticity. His work bridges molecular biology and evolutionary theory to understand how epigenetic information is inherited and selected across generations.
His recent publication in Trends in Genetics (2025) reviews the role of small RNA inheritance in animal evolution, highlighting the selective pressures on the epigenome. This work reflects his interdisciplinary approach combining genetics, epigenetics, and evolutionary biology.
Mr Harris's doctoral research is supported by a Leverhulme Trust grant, which enables his investigation into transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. As a PhD student, he does not currently supervise advisees. He is an active member of the Maklakov lab, a research group dedicated to understanding the evolutionary and mechanistic aspects of aging and inheritance. The lab provides a collaborative environment for exploring fundamental questions in evolutionary biology.
