Irvin Scott is a Senior Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he also serves as Faculty Co-Chair of the Online Master's in Education program. He joined HGSE in summer 2016 and teaches in both the School Leadership Program and Doctor of Education Leadership Program. His career spans over 25 years in education, including roles as a classroom teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and chief academic officer.
Scott earned his Ed.D. from Harvard University in 2011, following a master's from Temple University and bachelor's from Millersville University. His professional journey includes serving as chief academic officer for Boston Public Schools and deputy director for K-12 education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he led a $300 million initiative focused on teacher development and initiated the nationwide ECET2 teacher leadership movement.
Scott's research focuses on educational leadership, equity, and faith-based educational partnerships. His work emphasizes systemic approaches to addressing educational inequities through data-informed methods and community collaboration. He founded the Leadership Initiative for Faith and Education (L.I.F.E.) to create effective partnerships between faith-based organizations and public schools in marginalized communities. His framework for becoming an "equity detective" provides practical strategies for educators to identify and address systemic barriers in their schools.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on educational transformation through leadership development, equity work, and faith-based community partnerships. Across his works, Scott emphasizes understanding structural inequities while providing actionable strategies for educators. His forthcoming book on faith and education builds on his established work connecting religious communities with public education.
