Iris Acejo is a Researcher at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, affiliated with the Seafarers International Research Centre (SIRC). She holds a PhD in Filipino seafarers and transnationalism (2013) from Cardiff University. Her research focuses on labour migration, seafaring, and the socio-economic conditions of maritime workers. Key areas include transnational identities, health disparities among seafarers, gender dynamics in merchant shipping, and the impact of globalization on maritime labour.
Her work explores seafarers’ assimilation processes, healthcare access on ships, and welfare challenges faced by women in seafaring. Notable collaborations include projects with Prof. Helen Sampson and Prof. Theo Nichols, analyzing health trends (2023–2024), port-based welfare needs, and cross-border union strategies. Acejo has contributed to policy recommendations on seafarer accommodation standards and mandatory equipment use on cargo vessels. Her research frequently intersects with public health, occupational safety, and migrant labour rights.
Acejo’s recent publications (2025) emphasize health monitoring systems for seafarers in cruise and cargo sectors, reflecting a growing focus on maritime workforce wellbeing. She has presented at international symposia, including analyses of accident investigations and ship-shore personnel dynamics. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, global health, and labour economics.
