Professor Rod Hick is a leading academic in social policy at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences. His research focuses on poverty, social security, and welfare state dynamics, with a particular emphasis on labor markets, housing systems, and inequality. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and has been recognized with the Best Paper Prize at the FISS conference in 2015. Currently, he leads or contributes to funded projects including a Swiss-UK comparative study on low-quality work and poverty, a Nuffield Foundation study on welfare system discretion, and an evaluation of the Welsh Basic Income Pilot for care leavers. His work has influenced UK and Welsh government policies, including advising on the Child Poverty Strategy. He teaches modules on poverty and social security, and serves as Co-Director of Research for Research Support and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in his school.
His research spans European poverty trends, the impact of social security reforms, and housing affordability. Recent projects include analyzing post-Great Recession housing-poverty links and presenting at ESPAnet and RC19 conferences. He co-edited the Journal of Poverty and Social Justice from 2017-2021 and contributes to media discussions on poverty and welfare. His upcoming monograph synthesizes decades of work on European poverty and living standards.
Professor Hick’s academic output includes over 40 peer-reviewed articles, policy reports, and conference contributions. His advisory roles extend to governmental bodies, ensuring his research informs public policy. He actively supervises PhD students in poverty, social security, and welfare state comparative research.
